Martin Scorsese is my favourite film director and this is not the first time I am mentioning this. I am in awe of his exploration of the inner layers of the human mind and the psychological setup of a human being itself. Scorsese had to wait for too long to win his first Oscar. Was Taxi Driver not worth an award for the director? Raging Bull? Good Fellas? Cape Fear? Gangs of Newyork? The Aviator? Finally, The Departed! It is not that his movies were not worthy enough to be awarded. The time had not arrived yet!
Saturn (Rx) is posited in the 10th house of Taurus in the nativity by night. Saturn, out of sect in the 10th house is surely capable of causing frustrating delay. But, Saturn - would it stop the inevitable? The reason why it is inevitable is because Saturn, as a natural malefic does well in upachaya houses of 3,6,10 and 11. In April 1969, Saturn’s bound in Taurus rose to the MC which kick started a career in cinema for Martin Scorsese where he developed some of the greatest friendships amongst the directors and actors.
Scorsese became friends with the influential "movie brats" of the 1970s: Brian De Palma, Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. It was De Palma who introduced Scorsese to Robert De Niro. During this period, Scorsese worked as the assistant director and one of the editors on the documentary Woodstock (1970) and met actor–director John Cassavetes, who became a close friend and mentor. In 1972, Scorsese made the Depression-era exploiter Boxcar Bertha for B-movie producer Roger Corman, who also helped directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, James Cameron, and John Sayles launch their careers. It was Corman who taught Scorsese that entertaining films could be shot with very little money or time, preparing the young director well for the challenges to come with Mean Streets. Brian de Palma introduced him to Robert deNiro which went on to become one of the greatest collaborations in the history of hollywood. Saturn is placed in the 10th house opposing the Sun and Venus. This configuration with Venus is actually a reception which brings more meaning to Saturn (Rx) in Taurus. Retrograde factor makes Saturn more strong in this case because there is more focus and precision at work and this is called as Chesta Bala - planet gaining strength through motion. In June 2004, Saturn’s bound in Gemini rose to the MC triggering yet another great period of professional success. Descriptive of Saturn’s retrograde phase (focus), Scorsese directed only two films during this period after the release of The Aviator (The Departed and Shutter Island). Even though Shutter Island did not win him an Academy Award, it was certainly one of the best pictures of his career.
Scorsese's direction of The Departed earned him his second Golden Globe for Best Director, as well as a Critics' Choice Award, his first Directors Guild of America Award, and the Academy Award for Best Director. While being presented with the award, Scorsese poked fun at his previous track record of nominations, asking "Could you double-check the envelope?". It was presented to him by his longtime friends and colleagues Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg. In early 2007, Martin Scorsese won the Academy Award for Best Director for the movie, The Departed. Saturn, the timelord with MC as significator has clearly come back to honor the native in his profession. Saturn in the 10th house has been so significant in facilitating the native to begin his profession and to bestow the native with the highest honor in the field of cinema.
Two Saturn ruled periods (MC) as per Primary Directions have proven to be really significant in the life of Martin Scorsese.
