In the life of Swami Vivekananda!

Updated: Feb 13, 2020

“Two worlds, Two poles. Two outlooks.
But the division lines between them -
As all things that divide - are an illusion.
The time is ripe for somebody to come
And to collect the scattered grains of truth”

- Swami Vivekananda while teaching in Russia

A Divine Coincidence

Last evening (December 25, 2019), I purchased a few books written by Sri Sri Daya Mata, Sri Paramahamsa Yogananda and Swami Vivekananda. My mind was kind of fixed with the thoughts. At around 00:30 hours last night, I was looking at Swami Vivekananda's natal chart and was wondering about a few things in the chart. I woke up this morning and checked for the chart of Sri Sri Daya Mata and there was no data available. So, I decided to write about Swami Vivekananda's chart. I started at around 07:41 (exactly when I saved the jpeg of Swami Vivekananda's natal in a folder) before the Solar Eclipse began at around 08:06 AM in Chennai, India.

After completing the article, an idea suddenly caught up to me that I have to check the event chart of beginning the article I knew that Sagittarius was rising because of Sun's position in Sagittarius (sidereal). But, I was stunned to see that the AC had just entered the 26° mark and Swami Vivekananda's AC is at 26°04 Sagittarius. Interestingly, Saturn is tightly conjunct the AC of Swami Vivekananda. I thought this was so interesting and hence shared it. Happy Eclipse!

In the life of Swami Vivekananda!

Swami Vivekananda was one of the greatest spiritual activists that the world has ever seen. Amidst lot of tension in the late 19th century, Swami Vivekananda turned out be a shining light who guided people with his spiritual teachings.

Zodiac: Sidereal

House system: Whole Signs

Nativity of Swami vivekananda

Ascendant and the Atma Karaka

Atma Karaka is the planet that is highest as per the degrees in the natal chart. In the native’s chart, Sun is posited in the highest degrees in Sagittarius (29°25’). The natural Atma Karaka, Sun is the Atma Karaka (AK) in this nativity and the position is so in line with the nature of Sagittarius which indicates higher learning, spirituality and philosophy. More importantly, AK is posited in the Ascendant (AC) itself and it closely conjunct the AC at 26°04’ Sagittarius.

“O vipra, just as by the order of the king, his son and his ministers are capable of doing public works, in the same manner the other Karakas also become effects giving in conformity with the AK. O Brahmin, just as the ministers etc. are not capable of doing public works if they are adverse to the king, in the sam way, if the AK is inauspicious the other karakas are unable to give auspicious effects. O Brahmin, just as all the ministers etc. are favourable if the king is favourable, the other karakas also do not exert their malefic influence if the AK is favourable.”

Sun in the final degree of sagittarius will mean that the Dwadasamsa position of Sun will turn out to be the 12th house from the natal chart. The Sun is also conjunct Jupiter in the Dwadasamsa chart which is a great indicator of the native’s spiritual inclination and charismatic representation of his own religion and thoughts. 12th house is the house of public life and charity. With the AK taking residence at the 12th house in Dwadasamsa, the amount of public travel that the native undertook in order to teach his spiritual lessons are really well established and doesn’t further analysis.

On the other hand, Ruler of the Sun, Jupiter (Lord of the AC) is posited in the 11th house in the natal chart and is in mutual aspect (opposition) with the 12th lord Mars. Mars (12L) in the 5th house of Aries is also a great indicator of the spiritual progress of the native. To have a good spiritual outlook and a successful spiritual life, one needs to have a really strong trine houses (1, 5 & 9). Sun in the 1st house as AK and Jupiter in the 11th in opposition with Mars from its domicile strengthens the trine houses thereby blessing the native with a spiritual outlook towards life and humanity.

Sun, the AK is further strengthened by its vargottama position as the Sun occupies the same sign of Sagittarius in the Navamsa as well. Interestingly, Dwadasamsa lagna falls in Libra which is the natal position of Sagittarius and it also has a trine connection with Mars (12L) in the Dwadasamsa chart.

Saturn and Moon conjunction

Saturn and Moon are occupying the 10th house along with the lot of spirit. This combination might not be necessarily favourable for family life but the association of the sect light with Saturn in the most powerful angular house is a strong foundation for the native’s fame. The amount of respect and followers Swami Vivekananda had across the globe was huge, especially during the late 19th century.

Saturn and the Moon are beneficial, productive of money, estates, ship ownership, and profits from the deceased, especially if the moon happens to be in the part of its orbit just following first visibility and has benefics in aspect. Then it causes association with the great, gifts and the discomfiture of enemies. This combination, however is unsteady with respect to possession and with respect to women. It is insecure and painful because of separations, hatred and grief. It also produces bodily suffering, sudden fits, pains of the governing faculties and nerves, as well as deaths of important figures.

The native might not have been wealthy as Valens suggests in terms of financial well being. But the native certainly turned out to be one of the shining lights to many people and all of the talks that the native presented across the world were very famous. There are books written about his talks long after his death. The book published on his teaching in Soviet Union is a clear example of it.

Mercury - Oikodespotes and Venus

Ruler of the 7th and the 10th house, Mercury is the Oikodespotes (Master of the nativity). Ruler of nativity, Mercury, posited in the 2nd house of Capricorn in the bounds of Jupiter is a fine example of the impeccable communication skills that the native had in presenting his spiritual ideologies that were always accepted and followed by millions. One more important thing to remember here is, Mercury is also a functional malefic and a makara planet for the natives born while Sagittarius was rising.

Moreover, there is also a mutual exchange between Saturn and Mercury. The exchange becomes even more significant and strong because of the close trine between those two planets. In the Navamsa, Mercury is posited in Aries and it conjunct the natal position of Mars which is yet another interesting connection which indicates the spiritual public life of the native.

Venus and Mercury are in harmony. They make sociable and gracious, gregarious and hedonistic paying attention to education and sensibility, receiving honors and gifts. For those of mediocre fortune, these stars bring about the receiving of goods, selling and exchanges and they bring a base livelihood. These stars make men unsteady and fickle with respect to women, changeable in their agreements (with them).

The native seemingly never had any association with women and did not have any involvement in buying or selling. However, he was the greatest promoter of education to the youths at that time and he was honored for his spiritual wisdom and teachings at various global communities. Swami Vivekananda was the greatest voice of education of modern India during the 19th century and this is very descriptive from the Mercury Venus conjunction in the 2nd house.

Firdaria

Jupiter - Sun - Death of Ramakrishna - 16 August 1886

Jupiter is the natural significator of Guru and Ramakrishna was Vivekananda’s mentor. Sun, the ruler of the 9th house signifies the mentor in this chart. Sun is posited in the 1st house of Sagittarius, indicates that it is time for Swami Vivekananda to take over the role of Ramakrishna as the torch bearer. Sun’s position in the natal 12th house in Dwadasamsa is symbolic of loss and here, it was the loss of mentor. Moreover, Sun is also in trine from Mars in the natal chart and it is hard to ignore the influence of Mars in the chart. With highly illuminated trine houses and the lords, the lineage is moving forward very well to say the least!

Jupiter - Saturn - Begins Major Project 1893 (Started spiritual teachings)

Until 1893, Swami Vivekananda was teaching the essence of spirituality across India but after May 31, 1893, he started travelling across the world to give talks in various conferences. His imprint are very significant in the west and they are all part of history.

Both Jupiter and Saturn can be associated with teaching. While Jupiter is a soft teacher, Saturn is a hard task master. Saturn’s prominence in the 10th house (powerful angle) in elevating the native to travel to far off places is certainly something we have to take note of. Saturn is closely conjunct the lot of spirit which indicates that the native really wanted to do what he did. Saturn’s association with Mercury is vital in chart for paving the way for the native to present speeches in various conferences across the globe.

Mars - Venus - Change residence 20 February 1897 (Returned to Calcutta)

During early 1897, he returned to his home to continue his teachings in India and gave speeches across India which started with a speech in Colombo in Sri Lanka as he arrived from Europe. Mars, the ruler of the 12th house had comfortably enabled the native to stay and lecture overseas for almost 4 years and however, during the sub period ruled by Venus placed in the 2nd house of family, the native had returned to India and continued his work in spirituality.

Mars - Moon - Begin Travel June 1899 (Returned to the New World)

During the Moon period, the native again started travelling across the world to present lectures. Moon, ruling the 8th house is posited in the 10th house along with Saturn which indicates yet another crucial period in his propaganda of spiritual ideologies.

“Vivekananda left for the West for a second time in June 1899 accompanied by Sister Nivedita and Swami Turiyananda. Following a brief stay in England, he went to the United States. During this visit, Vivekananda established Vedanta Societies in San Francisco and New York and founded a shanti ashrama (peace retreat) in California. He then went to Paris for the Congress of Religions in 1900. His lectures in Paris concerned the worship of the lingam and the authenticity of the Bhagavad Gita. Vivekananda then visited Brittany, Vienna, Istanbul, Athens and Egypt. The French philosopher Jules Bois was his host for most of this period, until he returned to Calcutta on 9 December 1900.”

This was also a period when his health started declining rapidly. Obviously, a period ruled by the 8th lord and the 12th lord has to be somewhat challenging. There are always two sides of the same coin. Mars and Moon, both rule a malefic house. Mars, an exception as it rules the 5th house. But still, there is also the 12th lordship which signals an end! However, the native lived through the entire period of Mars - Moon.

Moon is also maltreated due to its association with Saturn. Moon signifies the overall well being of the native and Moon, being the sect light in contact with Saturn is certainly worrisome if we look at the negative effects of this conjunction.

With the declining health, it wouldn’t be difficult for astrologers to predict death. But, given the age of the native (39) and the period, it might be a little tricky because the Sun rules the 9th house and is placed in the 1st house. One direct factor that we might notice is Sun’s position in 12th house by 12th parts can be symbolize an end. But, would I have predicted death with this? Probably not. So, diving further deep was necessary.

Primary Directions

Lot of death - Pisces 13°31’ & Sun in the bound of Jupiter

(AC to 8th, Moon)

Due to this lack of clarity, I directed the time lord Sun through the bounds and noticed that the Sun is posited in Jupiter’s bound of Aquarius. Jupiter is the ruler of the 1st and 4th houses. And that really doesn’t answer our event. More importantly, it is quite crucial to note that Jupiter is also the ruler of the lot of death which is placed in Pisces. Sun ruled by Jupiter (ruler of the lot of death) by directions is extremely crucial in this case.

AC in Venus’ bound of Aquarius - Death - 4 July 1902 (Age 39)

Venus’ bound of Aquarius was rose to the AC and Venus rules the 6th and the 11th house of the native. 6th house indicates health issues and hurdles which goes without saying. But, Venus’ position in the natal chart in conjunction with Mercury which is a functional malefic to Pisces and Sagittarius rising charts is a direct indicator of death. Moreover, 2nd house is also a maraka house as it is the 12th from the 3rd house which is one of the indicators of longevity.
