Saturn, Mars and the Sun Conjunction in Jataka Parijata & Anthology

Updated: Feb 13, 2020

While reading Jataka Parijata, I came across a Sloka talking about Saturn, Sun and Mars conjunction. This conjunction is not a very common one that we can see in many charts. I immediately took my copy of Vettius Valens' Anthology to see what he had written as to the conjunction of Sun with the two malefic stars. It was interesting to see what the texts had to say. Jataka Parijata did not seem to be considering this as an auspicious placement, understandably so. Valens gives some kind of consideration to the hardcore psychological traits of a human that are possible only with the Sun, Saturn and Mars conjunction. Below are the quotes from both the classical texts:

If Saturn, Sun and Mars form the Trigraha Yoga, the person affected by it will be bereft of kindred, ignorant, wealthy but suffering from diseases”. (1)

If Saturn, the Sun and Mars are indicative of forcible, outre, and dangerous matters. These stars make bold men, men of great ambition, wicked atheists, traitors, insubordinate, men who hate their own families, who abandon their own relatives to go with strangers. They are involved in contumely and dangers. They suffer falls from high places or from animals. They are afraid of burns, and are toilsome in their activities. They do not guard what they already have, but desire others’ goods. They profit from crime. If however, the configuration happens to be military or athletic, they are toilsome, but not unsuccessful. (2)

Unfortunately, I don’t know of any example charts to demonstrate this scenario of planetary conjunctions. Planetary conjunctions are extremely tricky even for seasoned astrologers because of the intricacies and varied conditions of planets in that particular sign. Talking of a sign, the planetary conjunction functions based upon the sign of the zodiac. It is extremely important to consider the nature and modality of a sign as those factors can alter the being of a planet in a particular sign apart from the dignity.

We would surely want to consider the proximity of Saturn and Mars to the Sun. Planets under the beams of the Sun gets overshadowed and they are invisible until they cross a specific degrees from the Sun. Hellenistic astrologers seem to have generalized to it as 15° from either side of the Sun. When the planets are under the beams of the Sun, their invisibility symbolically says that the planet is unable to function to the fullest of its potential because of to being overshadowed by the rays of the Sun.

Mars is a planet that relates to action and Mars might not be comfortable to remain under the beams because of its very nature as it wants to get out and be in action. When we have a specific position of Mars in the nativity, that particular topics of our life and that particular emotion takes over and leads the way without much of a hesitation. However, while Mars is overshadowed by the Sun, we would be in such a position where we won’t be able to showcase ourselves ahead of others. Sun usually represents leader. In such cases, we are usually forced to play a subdued role in any given situation and that is against the nature of Mars. We would have a lot of frustration in that particular area of life. Moreover, Mars is of the nocturnal sect while the Sun leads the diurnal sect. Like this, there are multiple mitigating and influencing factors in the nativity that we might want to consider.

Saturn on the other hand is a diurnal planet and being placed with sect leader, the Sun is a mitigating factor unto itself. If the nativity is of the day, this can be a positive placement provided there is a good benefic influence and dignity. If the nativity is nocturnal, there could be trouble because an in-sect planet, Mars would be under the beams and also hit by another malefic Saturn.

Saturn, under the beams of the Sun gives rise to many professions like mining engineering, petroleum engineering, spies in foreign countries and so on. All these jobs involve some deal of underplay in many cases. Mining is done under the ground and dealing with underground is a major part of petroleum engineering. Spies or undercover agents involve a great deal of tension and concealment and they are not done in the light of the day. So, in some cases, Saturn comes well in line with being under the beams. This could also work with Mars in case of intelligence agents and secret agents by being under the beams of the Sun.

If Saturn, the Sun and Mars are indicative of forcible, outre, and dangerous matters. These stars make bold men, men of great ambition… They profit from crime. If however, the configuration happens to be military or athletic, they are toilsome, but not unsuccessful. This is relatable with the people serving in the military of a nation. It is obviously forcible and dangerous as they put their life in jeopardy at all stages of their career until retirement. Valens’ delineation holds true with those people who are working as undercover of secret agents.

Contd: wicked atheists, traitors, insubordinate, men who hate their own families, who abandon their own relatives to go with strangers - This happens when one of the planets fall. When any of the planets fall, there is surely reception in the case of Aries or Libra. However, there is no reception when this conjunction happens in Cancer because Sun doesn’t have dignity while Saturn doesn’t have anything except a bound. There is a clear indication of direction less attitude in a man with distrubed and wavering emotions. Mars’ debilitation could be really damaging the existence of this conjunction or any hopes of being good. This indicates, traitors and men who abandon their own families.

If Saturn, Sun and Mars form the Trigraha Yoga, the person affected by it will be bereft of kindred, ignorant, wealthy but suffering from diseases - Sun, is the natural atma karaka and the Sun’s presence with two natural malefics will clearly dampen the spirits of a person and might not be as outgoing as one would like. These people might be rigid and not so easy to get along with. These are certainly not the people with whom you want to socialize. Well, that is probably because they are true some cause with their focus entirely fixed on what they want to do. Mars is Deha and when Mars is under the beams, our natural wellbeing health gets affected which could prove to be a hindrance in many walks of life. I really think, wealth mentioned in Jataka Parijata is something very difficult to relate to as I think it depends upon various other factors.

If none of the three planets have dignity in the sign they are placed together, then we might have to look at the dispositor and the strength of the dispositor. Obviously, more information could be found by looking at the Dwadasamsa position of the planets. It is fun to take up the texts of both east and west to bring about an integration!
